Key Action 'Improving the Socioeconomic Knowledge Base' had broad and ambitious objectives, namely: to improve our understanding of the structural changes taking place in European society, to identify ways of managing these changes and to promote the active involvement of European citizens in shaping their own futures. A further important aim was to mobilise the research communities in the social sciences and humanities at the European level and to provide scientific support to policies at various levels, with particular attention to EU policy fields. This Key Action had a total budget of EUR 155 million and was implemented through three Calls for proposals. As a result, 185 projects involving more than 1 600 research teams from 38 countries have been selected for funding and have started their research between 1999 and 2002. Most of these projects are now finalised and results are systematically published in the form of a Final Report. The calls have addressed different but interrelated research themes which have contributed to the objectives outlined above. These themes can be grouped under a certain number of areas of policy relevance, each of which are addressed by a significant number of projects from a variety of perspectives. These areas are the following: • Societal trends and structural change 16 projects, total investment of EUR 14.6 million, 164 teams • Quality of life of European citizens 5 projects, total investment of EUR 6.4 million, 36 teams • European socioeconomic models and challenges 9 projects, total investment of EUR 9.3 million, 91 teams • Social cohesion, migration and welfare 30 projects, total investment of EUR 28 million, 249 teams • Employment and changes in work 18 projects, total investment of EUR 17.5 million, 149 teams • Gender, participation and quality of life 13 projects, total investment of EUR 12.3 million, 97 teams • Dynamics of knowledge, generation and use 8 projects, total investment …
